Floor vs Ground
This annoyance, as far as I can tell, has only been around for a few years but it bugs me none the less.
Hasn’t anyone under the age of sixty gone to school? Hasn’t ANYONE been required to take any sort of language class? SERIOUSLY!
What is considered a floor?
A floor is the bottom surface of a room or vehicle. Floors vary from simple dirt in a cave to many-layered surfaces made with modern technology. Floors may be stone, wood, bamboo, metal, or any other material that can support the expected load.
While there are many materials, home flooring generally falls into three broad categories:
-
- Hard Surfaces (like wood, tile, stone, and concrete)
- Resilient/Soft Surfaces (like carpet, vinyl, linoleum, rubber)
- Engineered/Composite Surfaces (like laminate, engineered wood, and hybrid floors)
These offer choices from durable, classic looks to cozy, budget-friendly, or modern waterproof options.
What is considered the ground?
For the context of this annoyance post, ground (noun) means:
- Earth/Land: The solid surface of the planet or soil (e.g., “fell to the ground,” “stony ground”).
- Area/Place: Land set aside for a purpose (picnic grounds, hunting grounds) or the gardens around a building (grounds).
So then why?
EXAMPLE
One of the fake news outlets recently did a story about a person getting gunned down (shot) during a violent activity outside a government building, when the “reporter” stated, “The victim fell to the floor after getting shot.”
NO HE DIDN”T! HE FELL TO THE GROUND! Did his blood stain the tile or carpeting?
Why do people say “floor” instead of the proper word, “ground”?
